Be prepare to stay and help settle your child
Some children take several visits to kindergarten before they feel comfortable enough to stay on their own. As parents / whanau or caregivers you are welcome to stay at kindergarten for as long as you like.
This can be a great way to get to know the kindergarten Teachers and what goes on at your kindergarten.
When might it be time to leave?
Talk to the kindergarten Teachers about planning a time to leave so that they can be supportive to both you and your child.
You may arrange to call to check in on your child latter in the day if that would be helpful.
It is a good idea to always say goodbye to your child and not sneak off, this will help build a trusting relationship and helps children feel secure. Your child may cry when you say goodbye, but with the support of the kindergarten Teachers they will learn to trust that you will come back and to trust and build relationships with the Kindergarten Teachers.
Often a staggered approach works well and the first time you leave may need to be for a short time only and gradually build this up and stay away for a longer period of time. Always tell your child what the plan is so they know what to expect.
Every child is different and you will find your kindergarten Teachers are flexible and will discuss your child’s needs with you. You know your child best and it is important that you all work together to make settling in as smooth and happy a process as possible.
